You are here: Home \ About Us \ What is neighbourhood renewal?
We all want to live in clean, safe, prosperous neighbourhoods, with a strong sense of community, where people want the best for each other.
But the reality around us is not always like this. While some parts of Southwark are already affluent, people living in others have lower than average incomes, are more likely to suffer ill health, more likely to be victims of crime, and generally have a lower quality of life than people elsewhere in the UK.
No one organisation can meet the complex needs of an area's population alone, so an approach based on partnership between service providers and local people is required.
Neighbourhood Renewal is about bringing some of the 'good life' to areas which lag behind their better-off neighbours. The aim is that is that in 10-20 years' time, no-one should be seriously disadvantaged by where they live.
This means improving people's health, raising educational achievement, increasing job opportunities, and providing a more pleasant and a safer environment for all.
