About The Map

What the map is for

The map has been developed for everyone living, working or visiting the Camberwell area. Many local residents and business have contributed local information to ensure that the content was beneficial for as many people as possible.

It encourages people to find out what is on their doorstep and choose local options whether it is in a lunch hour, after work or at the weekend. Choosing walking or cycling and local shops, businesses, restaurants, cafes, bars, leisure facilities, galleries or theatres can benefit the whole community and could, long term, have positive impacts such as reducing traffic  impact in the town centre and driving investment in the area.

The map focuses on the town centre and provides less detailed information for the area beyond. It is hoped that further funding will be found to allow for an extension of the mapping to cover the whole of Camberwell in equal detail in the longer term.

The map is not intended to provide an exhaustive list of all services, and is designed to be used in conjunction with existing transport and services information. The content should continually evolve, as the area does, with input form those using it and support from the SE5 Forum and Camberwell Renewal team. Click here if you have feedback.

The map is available online and in hard copy to make it accessible to as many people as possible. You can find hard copies in local businesses and facilities such as libraries.

Why this map was developed

The map was developed following consultation with the Camberwell Local Travel Plan Group, suggesting the need for more local information tailored for and promoting the Camberwell area. The Camberwell Local Travel Plan Group has been working with Southwark Council as part of the Optimum2 project on a range of innovative travel planning tools and the interactive map has been developed as one of these tools.

Optimum2 is a project funded by the European Regional Development Fund Interreg IIIB programme for North West Europe, which aims to provide an effective approach for using travel planning to tackle the accessibility and mobility problems caused by congestion in urban areas. As a partner in the Optimum2 project Southwark Council is leading a pilot project to research and develop means of working with businesses to solve these problems, focusing on establishing local travel plan groups and developing travel planning tools such as bike pools. The Southwark pilot project team also includes SEA/Renue, Loughborough University and the University of Westminster. More information on the project can be found on the project website www.optimum2.org.

As well as funding from the Optimum2 project, additional funding has come from Southwark Council as part of their travel awareness programme and from the Camberwell Neighbourhood Renewal.

Development of the map was project managed by SEA/Renue, design was by Steer Davies Gleave.
